First of all, I just want to say that after loads of fiddling and spending time with the GT-10, I sadly, very sadly have to admit that the Pre-Amp models on it just don't cut it. I know there's a whole bunch of guys out there, who believe and go talking about how really usable the Pre-Amps on the GT are, but sorry, I've tried everything i could, I really don't think it's true. Although i must admit, for relatively clean and overdriven sounds, it is pretty nice. Specially the OD block. But for Hi-Gain sounds, NO.
Having said that, you MUST know that there is not a more versatile or advanced MFX unit out there. The number of assignable parameters are believably great. The control it offers over effects is unprecedented. And so, if you do have a pretty OK amp, and maybe a good distortion pedal, think no further. Just go ahead and buy the GT-10. I use it in the same way. I have a VOX AD50VT. which i think is a pretty awesome amp. SO i just use the GT for effects and reverb and delay and maybe a little bit of overdrive. It works great that way.
PS: If you have managed somehow to get great heavy sounding tones from your GT-10, I'm really happy for you. Really. But please don't send me mails telling me how tweaking needs a lot of time and patience and I'm a dick to have give up so quick.

*One interesting thing you can do, is assign any of your Ctrl. pedals to change the resonance from 0 to 100. Then, assign the EXP. Pedal to control the MANUAL on the phaser as you sweep. It gives you this really crazy, space-age sound. Pretty good for outros, and when things get a little crazy. Fun.
